Eight parks in Tottenham are set to receive major improvements as part of a £1.5 million investment announced by Haringey Council. The significant funding boost will enhance facilities across several parks and recreation grounds in the east of the borough.
Bruce Castle Park, Downhills Park, and Lordship Recreation Ground will each receive over £250,000 in improvements, while substantial six-figure sums will also be allocated to Chestnuts Park, Markfield Park, Paignton Park, and White Hart Lane Recreation Ground. Additional funds have been earmarked for improvements to Belmont Recreation Ground.
The investment, made possible by redistributing existing developer-funded capital, was officially announced at a launch event at Bruce Castle Park. Deputy Mayor of London for Environment & Energy, Mete Coban MBE, joined Haringey Council Leader Cllr Peray Ahmet and Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Emily Arkell at the ceremony.
“We know just how much Haringey residents value our borough’s parks,” said Cllr Arkell. “It’s fundamentally important for the development of our young children that they have accessible, inclusive and safe playgrounds to exercise, play and socialise in.”
The council has emphasized community involvement in the improvement process, with plans to implement a participatory budget approach where residents can help decide how funds are allocated within each scheme. Local Friends groups have already been consulted, and the council plans to work directly with children, young people, and their families to co-design the projects.
The improvements will focus on creating fully accessible and inclusive play spaces, aligning with commitments made in the Parks and Greenspaces Strategy. Work is scheduled to begin this autumn, with all eight projects expected to be completed by spring 2026.
The council has also announced plans to seek additional funding through continued collaboration with community groups and external partners to expand the scope of improvements across all eight parks.
