Heathrow Reports Record-Breaking Start to 2025

Heathrow Airport has announced a record-breaking January, with passenger numbers exceeding 6.3 million – the highest ever for the first month of the year and a 5 percent increase from 2024. The UK’s premier hub airport maintained its streak of serving over 200,000 passengers daily for the eleventh consecutive month.

Trans-Atlantic travel played a significant role in this growth, with more than 1.2 million passengers traveling between the UK and US, marking an 8 percent increase compared to the previous year. The airport also maintained its position as the UK’s primary cargo hub, handling nearly 120,000 tonnes of cargo in January – twice the volume of all other UK airports combined.

Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye commented on the strong performance: “2025 has started how we mean to go on – serving record breaking passenger numbers and delivering trade and investment across the whole of the UK.”

The airport’s success was further recognized at the Travel Weekly Globe Travel Awards, where it won ‘Best UK Airport’ for the fourth consecutive year. This achievement comes alongside the recent unveiling of The Windsor by Heathrow, a newly refurbished private terminal aimed at enhancing the airport’s VIP services.

Looking ahead, Heathrow is preparing to submit expansion proposals to the Government by summer, following the Chancellor’s recent support for a third runway. The airport acknowledges that successful delivery of this project will require policy changes in areas including airspace modernization, planning policy reform, and regulatory adjustments.

The strong January performance suggests Heathrow is well-positioned for continued growth in 2025, though the implementation of expansion plans will depend on successful collaboration with government stakeholders and policy reforms.
