Acclaimed British comedian and actor Kieran Hodgson is set to premiere his new show ‘Voice of America’ at London’s Soho Theatre this summer, marking his first foray into political comedy while drawing on his experiences in Hollywood.
The four-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee will perform at the central London venue from 16-28 June, with tickets going on sale to the general public on Wednesday 12th March.
‘Voice of America’ represents a slight departure for Hodgson, as he engages with current affairs for the first time while retaining the character-led storytelling that has earned him critical acclaim. The show was inspired by his experience working on the Warner Brothers superhero film ‘The Flash’, where he played ‘Sandwich Guy’ in the opening scene but was told by producers that his American accent wasn’t convincing enough.
In the show, Hodgson attempts to understand what America “truly sounds like” by exploring various facets of contemporary American culture – from Trump rallies and Taylor Swift anthems to Pride marches and the January 6th Capitol riots. Through his renowned vocal mimicry, he asks whether American voices can still inspire hope in a complicated world.
“Kieran Hodgson has consistently been one of the most innovative and thoughtful comedians working in Britain today,” said comedy critic James Harrison. “His ability to blend personal storytelling with broader social themes makes this new direction particularly intriguing.”
Hodgson is perhaps best known to television audiences as a series regular across five series of BBC One’s popular sitcom ‘Two Doors Down’. He also wrote and starred in ‘Prince Andrew The Musical’ for Channel 4, leading a cast of comics in a satirical portrayal of the controversial royal figure.
His previous live shows, including ‘Lance’, ‘Maestro’, ”75′ and ‘Big In Scotland’, have sold out venues across the UK and earned him consistent recognition at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2023, ‘Big In Scotland’ received his fourth nomination for Best Show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards.
Beyond comedy, Hodgson has built a respectable acting career, appearing in the murder mystery film ‘See How They Run’ alongside Saoirse Ronan and Sam Rockwell, as well as roles in Netflix’s ‘The Irregulars’, BBC’s ‘Upstart Crow’, and the indie film ‘All My Friends Hate Me’.
The Yorkshire-born performer was recently named one of The Telegraph’s “50 funniest comedians of the 21st Century” and has received five-star reviews from publications including The Guardian and the Daily Telegraph.
Tickets for ‘Voice of America’ at Soho Theatre start from £18, with a presale beginning on 11th March before general release the following day. Further UK and international tour dates are expected to be announced in the coming months.
For fans of British comedy and political satire, Hodgson’s new show promises to deliver his trademark intelligent humor while venturing into the complex landscape of American politics and culture at a particularly volatile time in US history.
