Vintage Steam Trains Set to Journey Through Chiltern Hills in Summer 2025

A new opportunity for railway enthusiasts and casual travelers alike is coming to London next summer as The Steam Dreams Rail Co. introduces exclusive steam-powered excursions through the scenic Chiltern Hills.

The heritage rail operator has announced two special summer dates—July 10 and August 21, 2025—for its new circular routes departing from London Paddington. The journeys will feature the historically significant 70000 Britannia locomotive, a steam engine that once had the honor of pulling the Royal Train.

Travelers can choose between a daytime experience called “The Spirit of Summer Lunchtime Tour,” running from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM, or an evening option, “The Sunset Steam Express,” operating from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM.

The scenic route will take passengers from Paddington along the Thames Valley toward Oxford before turning southeast through the Chiltern Hills, an officially designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Passengers will enjoy views of chalk hills, ancient woodland, historic Iron Age hillforts, and verdant valleys.

“These journeys offer more than just transportation—they’re an immersive experience in a bygone era of elegant travel,” said Juliet Soley, a representative of Steam Dreams. “The combination of nostalgic steam travel, luxurious surroundings, and the stunning landscapes of the Chilterns creates a truly magical experience.”

Two travel classes are available. The premium Pullman Dining option includes a multi-course meal featuring locally sourced ingredients, served on tables with white linens and fine china. This experience costs £235 ($300) for the lunch journey and £195 ($250) for the evening departure.

First Class travel, priced at £145 ($185) for daytime and £100 ($128) for evening journeys, offers spacious seating and large windows for optimal viewing. Passengers can bring their own refreshments or add an afternoon tea service for an additional £26 ($33).

The Steam Dreams Rail Co. has been operating heritage rail journeys since 1999 and was acquired by Locomotive Services Group in 2022, providing access to an expanded fleet of historic engines and carriages. The company notes that it has been carbon neutral for the past decade, offsetting emissions from all aspects of its operations.

These limited Chiltern Hills excursions are expected to sell quickly, with bookings available through the company’s website or by calling their reservation line.

For those looking to gift this unique experience, the company offers vouchers starting at £50, valid for a full year from purchase.
