Reform UK councillors resign in protest over Farage

Ten councillors from Reform UK in Derbyshire have announced their resignation in protest against Nigel Farage’s leadership. The group claims that Reform UK has been increasingly autocratic and has lost its direction since Farage became the leader in June. Farage, however, dismissed their resignations, stating that the councillors were part of a rogue branch of the party and did not pass the vetting process. He also mentioned that he has reconciled with Elon Musk, following a social media post by Musk suggesting that Reform UK needed a new leader. Farage stated that the councillors who resigned were not legitimately put forward by the party and that there may need to be by-elections. Alex Stevenson, the leader of the Derbyshire group, was suspended pending an internal investigation. The 10 councillors include Stevenson and others who hold seats at various levels of government. Despite allegations that some of the candidates put forward for local elections did not pass the party’s vetting process, Stevenson defended them, stating that they were good individuals. The group released a statement expressing their lack of confidence in the party’s leadership and structures, criticizing the lack of internal democracy and the sidelining of former co-deputy leader Ben Habib. Reform UK’s chairman, Zia Yusuf, accused the group of fraudulent actions and illegitimate nominations. Farage responded to Habib’s departure from the party by saying, “Good riddance.” Elon Musk had previously criticized Farage’s leadership but has since reconciled with him, as they both share similar aims and do not want to be at odds with each other.
