Haringey Council is strengthening its environmental enforcement capabilities in direct response to residents’ demands for cleaner streets, officials announced today.
The expansion will add 15 new environmental enforcement officers to the borough’s existing team, with deployment planned across all areas of Haringey. These officers will have authority to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for various offenses including littering, fly-tipping, dog fouling, graffiti, and improper waste disposal.
The decision follows overwhelming community support for stricter enforcement measures. A recent survey revealed that 96% of residents support fines for fly-tipping, while 94% back penalties for dog fouling and littering. Business and community organizations also strongly favored enforcement, with 83% supporting penalties for illegal waste dumping.
“We regularly engage with our residents to understand the challenges they face, and the cleanliness of our borough emerged as a great concern, and I couldn’t agree more,” said Councillor Seema Chandwani, Cabinet Member for Tackling Inequality and Resident Services.
“Haringey is home to iconic landmarks, beautiful parks, and a vibrant community that residents deeply care about. Unfortunately, a small minority spoil this for others, and it’s time to take further action,” Chandwani added.
The enhanced enforcement team will monitor compliance with various waste management regulations, including proper waste transfer documentation for businesses and appropriate placement of construction materials and skips.
“These additional roles underscore our commitment to keeping Haringey clean and holding those who pollute our borough accountable,” said Councillor Chandwani. “By working together with our residents, we’ll ensure everyone plays their part in protecting our community.”
The council encourages all residents to dispose of waste properly and to report environmental offenses to support the initiative.
