Award-winning comedian Garrett Millerick’s acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe show “Just Trying to Help” is set to make its streaming debut on 800 Pound Gorilla next month. The special, which earned rave reviews during its original 2022 run, will be available through a “Pick Your Price” model starting February 14th, 2025.
Described by critics as “devastatingly funny” and “smart, provocative, and playful,” the show tackles the unintended consequences of good intentions in divisive times. Millerick, often called “the world’s angriest optimist,” brings his signature blend of sharp wit and cultural commentary to examine how modern zealotry has replaced traditional religious devotion.
Drawing from his experience growing up in an Irish immigrant family in the 1980s, Millerick explores his journey from devoted Catholic to “Godless heathen,” and his surprising discovery of how modern movements often mirror religious fervor. The show particularly focuses on the rise of new cultural “prophets,” from Greta Thunberg to Elon Musk, offering what The Scotsman called “proper belly laughs” while delivering incisive social commentary.
The special has gained additional relevance since its original run, particularly in its prescient observations about figures like Elon Musk. “We live in deeply divided times, in the UK, in the US, and all over the world,” Millerick notes. “Just Trying to Help is about navigating these complexities with humor. It’s an hour of sensible answers to stupid questions and firm opinions lightly held.”
The release marks the conclusion of Millerick’s “Fatherhood Trilogy,” following his previous acclaimed shows “Sunflower” (2018) and “Smile” (2019). The special will be available exclusively on 800 Pound Gorilla’s website for two weeks before expanding to their wider network on February 28th.
Millerick’s previous work has earned consistent praise from major publications, with The Times calling him “wickedly funny” and The Telegraph praising his “powerhouse performance.” This latest special looks set to continue that tradition, offering what One4Review called “a breath of fresh air for comedy lovers.”
The special was filmed during the show’s successful run at London’s Soho Theatre, where it played to sold-out audiences following its Edinburgh Fringe debut.
