A beloved 1930s London cinema is set to begin its next chapter as a major comedy and theatre venue this May. The former Granada cinema in Walthamstow will reopen as Soho Theatre Walthamstow, bringing world-class entertainment to East London in a beautifully restored Grade II* listed building.
The 960-seat venue has announced an impressive inaugural lineup featuring some of Britain’s biggest comedy names, including Dara O’Briain, Sara Pascoe, and Phil Wang. A new monthly comedy showcase, “Neon Nights,” will feature established stars alongside emerging talent, while award-winning performer Bryony Kimmings will premiere her first show in five years, “Bogwitch.”
In a nod to the venue’s history, pantomime will return to its stage after a 70-year absence with “Aladdin & The Magic Lamp,” written and directed by Susie McKenna. The building, which once hosted performances by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Duke Ellington, has undergone extensive renovation by Waltham Forest Council in partnership with Soho Theatre.

“We’re no longer a small theatre,” says Dame Heather Rabbatts DBE, Chair of Soho Theatre. “Alongside our Dean Street home, we’ll be presenting world-class artists to even larger audiences in our new and gloriously refurbished venue in Walthamstow.”
The project represents a victory for local campaigners who fought for over a decade to preserve the building’s entertainment heritage after its closure in 2003. Local residents will benefit from 15,000 tickets priced at £15 throughout the first year.
The venue will feature four bars and a restaurant, with its own locally-brewed beer. Additional spaces include new studios and updated backstage facilities, making it a significant addition to London’s cultural landscape.
Alessandro Babalola, Co-Chair of Soho Theatre Walthamstow and local resident, describes the development as “sensational,” adding, “As someone born and raised in this borough, it’s astounding to be part of bringing a world-class theatre here.”
Tickets for the opening season go on sale on January 30th at sohotheatre.com.
