Haringey Council and the local community have bid a heartfelt farewell to former councillor Erline Prescott, the borough’s first Black female Mayor, at a funeral attended by friends, family, and colleagues. Prescott passed away in November 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to Haringey.
Erline Prescott was a trailblazer in local politics, serving as the Deputy Mayor from 1993 to 1994 before making history as the borough’s first Black female Mayor in 1994. She later held the position again from 2003 to 2004, earning widespread respect for her warmth, leadership, and commitment to the community.
Prescott was also a passionate advocate for children and young people in Haringey, championing their rights during her time as a West Green ward councillor, a role she held across two decades (1990–98 and 2002–06). Her contributions extended beyond her political duties, making her a beloved figure within the borough.
Haringey Council honored Prescott’s memory with a minute’s silence during a Full Council meeting in November 2024. A council spokesperson expressed condolences, saying, “Erline will be fondly remembered as a key figure in the Haringey community. On behalf of the people of Haringey, we send our sincerest condolences to her family and friends.”
Prescott’s family takes great pride in her many achievements, reflecting the strong values and dedication she brought to her work and personal life. Her legacy as a trailblazer and community champion will continue to inspire future generations in Haringey.
