Two of Britain’s most celebrated steam locomotives will headline an exciting year of events at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, as the heritage line joins nationwide celebrations marking 200 years of British railways.
The railway has secured visits from both Sir Nigel Gresley and Bahamas locomotives, offering enthusiasts a rare chance to see these icons of steam in action. Sir Nigel Gresley, which still holds the post-war steam speed record of 112 mph, will run in March, while Bahamas makes its debut appearance on the line in April.
“We’re incredibly proud of our heritage and look forward to welcoming everyone to celebrate with us,” says Laura Strangeway, CEO of the heritage railway. The line, which winds through spectacular North Yorkshire countryside, will operate five days a week during off-peak seasons and daily during peak periods from March 31st.
Special events planned for 2025 include the return of the popular Diesel Gala in June and the Annual Steam Gala in September. For families, the railway offers themed activities throughout the year, from Easter challenges to spooky Halloween ghost trains and festive Santa Specials.
The railway, which received £400,000 in Gift Aid donations last year, has introduced new visitor incentives including 10% discounts for advance bookings and free travel for two children with family tickets. Those opting to add a charitable donation to their ticket price will receive a 15% voucher for use in station facilities.
Running through some of Yorkshire’s most picturesque landscapes, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway continues to be one of Britain’s most successful heritage lines, combining historical preservation with family entertainment. The 2025 season promises to be one of its most ambitious yet, as it joins Railway 200 celebrations marking two centuries since the birth of Britain’s railway age.
