St Paul’s Cathedral is the most Instagrammed cathedral in the UK

The team at www.visitgloucester.co.uk have conducted research in order to discover the most Instagrammed cathedrals across the UK. Looking at Instagram’s hashtag data for every cathedral in the UK, they have compiled a list of the top ten most Instagrammed cathedrals, for the UK as a whole, as well as for each country.

 The top 10 most Instagrammed cathedrals in the UK were found to be:

  1. London Cathedral (St Paul’s) – 428,802
  2. Salisbury Cathedral – 62,833
  3. Durham Cathedral – 62,637
  4. Lincoln Cathedral – 60,986
  5. Canterbury Cathedral – 55,826
  6. Winchester Cathedral – 37,456
  7. Liverpool Cathedral – 35,713
  8. Ely Cathedral – 34,721
  9. Gloucester Cathedral – 31,261
  10. Norwich Cathedral – 31,228

 The data shows that out of the top 25 cathedrals in the United Kingdom, 22 of them are Church of England cathedrals. Of the others in then top 25, one is a Roman Catholic Church and two are Church of Scotland.

As well as looking at the UK as a whole, the research also revealed the most popular cathedrals in England, Scotland and Wales.

The top three Instagrammed cathedrals in England were found to be:

  1. London Cathedral (St Paul’s) – 428,802
  2. Salisbury Cathedral – 62,833
  3. Durham Cathedral – 62,637

 The top three most Instagrammed cathedrals in Wales are:

  1. St David’s Cathedral – 8,679
  2. Llandaff Cathedral – 4,376
  3. Brecon Cathedral – 905

And finally, the top three most Instagrammed cathedrals in Scotland were revealed as:

  1. Edinburgh St Giles Cathedral – 25,976
  2. Glasgow Cathedral – 22,673
  3. Inverness Cathedral – 996

 “We’re so fortunate to have so many stunning, culturally and historically rich cathedrals all around the UK that people can attend and enjoy. Gloucester Cathedral is a key landmark for the city and county, attracting 400,000 tourists from all over each year, especially having been a focal location for many films and TV series, including Harry Potter and even Doctor Who.”
