A Royal Mail delivery van has caused amusement among Isle of Wight residents after appearing on the island sporting Welsh language branding. The vehicle, spotted in the village of Brighstone, displays ‘Post Brenhinol’ – the Welsh translation of Royal Mail – in what the company confirms was a signwriting error.
Local resident Ian Elcock, who photographed the unusual sight, initially speculated whether a van destined for Newport in Wales had somehow made its way to the island by mistake. However, Royal Mail has clarified that the vehicle was correctly delivered to Newport, Isle of Wight, but was mistakenly given Welsh branding on one side by their contracted signwriters.
“It was not possible to correct this during the peak period when demand was high,” a Royal Mail spokesperson explained, “but it’ll be rectified as soon as possible.”
This isn’t the first case of Welsh language appearing unexpectedly on the island. In 2023, supermarket chain Aldi raised eyebrows when it installed Welsh language signage at its Cowes store.
The incident adds to a growing collection of amusing signage mix-ups on the Isle of Wight, though residents might need to brush up on their Welsh while waiting for the van to receive its English makeover.
