New Theatre Company Debuts AI-Themed Production at Young Vic

A groundbreaking new theatre company has launched its inaugural production at the Young Vic, tackling themes of artificial intelligence, grief, and community governance. “AiTopia,” which opened this week, features a diverse ensemble of 50 artists from London’s Lambeth and Southwark neighborhoods.

The production explores a near-future society where AI technology promises eternal life in a community that has eliminated traditional policing. The story follows five families as they grapple with the moral and emotional implications of this technological advancement.

“AiTopia” marks the debut of The Collective, a newly formed company under the Young Vic’s Taking Part creative engagement program. The group, which began meeting in June 2024, brings together community members with various artistic backgrounds, from acting and writing to technical production.

Director Michelle Payne has led the collaborative effort, working with eleven co-writers and a cast of eighteen performers. The production features innovative set and costume design by a seven-person team, with additional creative contributions in lighting, sound, and movement.

The project represents a departure from traditional theatre-making models, emphasizing community involvement and collaborative creation. All members of The Collective have previous experience with the Young Vic’s Neighborhood Theatre project, having participated within the last five years.

The Young Vic’s Taking Part department, which engages with over 15,000 people annually, continues its mission to provide free tickets and creative opportunities to local community members. The production will run at the Young Vic Maria Theatre until February 1, 2025, with all performances designated as relaxed performances and a BSL-interpreted show scheduled for January 31.

This innovative production showcases the potential of community-driven theatre while examining timely questions about technology’s role in society and human relationships.

A writer who loves all things British.
