Safety Measures Strengthened at Downhills Park Following Community Meeting

Haringey Council has met with community representatives to address safety concerns at Downhills Park following a series of vandalism incidents and anti-social behavior in the children’s playground last year.

The meeting, which took place yesterday afternoon, brought together members of the Friends of Downhills Park group with Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Councillor Emily Arkell, and Deputy Leader Councillor Sarah Williams. The discussion focused on implementing new safety measures and addressing ongoing community concerns.

“We take these incidents very seriously and are continuing to do everything in our power to prevent any prospective recurrence,” said Councillor Arkell. “The public health, safety and welfare of our park users remains very important to us.”

The council confirmed they are supporting an ongoing police investigation into the incidents, following the arrest and bail of a man earlier this month. The meeting also provided an opportunity for closer collaboration between the council and local residents, aligning with the objectives of the Haringey Deal community initiative.

Downhills Park, located in the West Green ward, is one of Haringey’s key green spaces. The council’s Parks team has been working to maintain high standards throughout the park while implementing new security measures following last year’s incidents.

Councillor Arkell committed to continued engagement with local residents and the Friends group, promising regular meetings to address any future concerns and ensure the park remains a safe space for all users.

The meeting represents part of the council’s broader strategy to protect and enhance Haringey’s parks and open spaces while ensuring they remain safe and accessible to all community members.
